The Botanical Garden is, according to the International Union of Botanical Gardens [3], a living museum, which exhibits, ex situ, scientifically documented collections of plants for the purpose of scientific research of floristic biodiversity, its conservation, but also environmental information, awareness, education and recreation of citizens.
The first systematic botanical gardens made their appearance from about 1500 BC in Babylon, where hanging gardens are known to almost everyone. From 1600 AD they began to make their appearance in universities, while in the Prague Medical School the first botanical garden had been created since the 4th century AD.
The botanical garden founded in Salerno, Italy, by Matthew the Silvatic who founded it already in 1309 AD, can be considered as the first chronicle.
As ancestors of today’s botanical gardens in Europe should be considered the monastic gardens. In Greece, the first botanical garden was founded in 1835 in Athens on the Sacred Way, the so-called Botanical Garden of Athens, which was established by the decree “on the establishment of neophytes” of 1835 and initially occupied the entire “Haseki estate” of 120 acres. [5]. Of these, in 1915, 95 were seconded to the Higher Agricultural School and later the remaining 25 to the Agricultural University of Athens.
Today one of the main missions of the Botanical Gardens is the acclimatization of plants to a new environment. Through this multipurpose mask come to life the collections of living plants that are anyway the impact force of a Botanical Garden.
