Description

Leopard: A great, old love! The relationship of fashion with the leopard is old and close. Seshat, the Egyptian deity of wisdom, Cybele, the Asia Minor deity of wildlife and fertility, and Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, were often depicted dressed in leopard fur.
For several centuries leopards could only be worn by gods and very rich people, as leopard fur was scarce and expensive. We had to get to the 18th century and the revolution in the industrial production of fabrics to print a leopard pattern on fabrics and make it fashionable in Italy and France. At the beginning of the 19th century, the rise of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements inspired the fashion to use animal motifs, and soon the dominance of synthetic fabrics made the leopard print accessible to everyone.
In 1924 the great French designer Jeanne Lanvin presented leopard silk dresses, and in 1947 Christian Dior used leopard prints in his legendary collection “New Look”. But it was in 1950, when the leopard became an underwear and swimsuit that was forever associated with female sexuality.
What would fashion be without the leopard? Hard to imagine. Jackie Kennedy’s much-photographed Oleg Cassini coat, Anne Bancroft’s unsurpassed appearance in “Rookie,” Edie Sedgwick’s appearances at New York clubs next to Andie Warhol, Ava Gardner’s swimsuit and Diane von Furstenberg’s wrap-dress in its most iconic version were all leopards. And later punk, Debbie Harry, Madonna, Kate Moss, Azzedine Alaïa and Michelle Obama loved leopard and made it a classic choice for every generation from the ’70s to the present day. In the last decade, leopard has been included every season, winter and summer, in the major fashion trends. Leopard is the ultimate statement print. Sometimes intertwined with the concept of expensive, classic and sometimes cheap, it can have many faces and symbolisms. One such choice is therefore the specific visor – bandana.
