Description

Decorative wooden vintage bookshelves. Many were those who tried to build a machine that could transmit sound through electricity. This was accomplished by the Scottish physicist Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The device used included an elastic membrane made of iron, which was located in front of a ferromagnetic core, wrapped with an insulated conductor. A line of two wires connected this device to another similar one. Both devices were used as receivers and transmitters. On Bell’s device, the voice fell on the membrane and made it pulsate. This device was only used for speeches nearby. However, after the invention of the microphone by the American David Edward Hughes in 1877, the telephone began to evolve and be used to connect long distances. This microphone included a small carbon rod surrounded by two layers of carbon. At first a microphone and headset were mounted together. The phone went through various developments to reach its current form.
