Description
Film – legend of Greek cinema, which was screened in 1955 and made Melina Mercouri a star of international standing
Divided critics of the time, they treated the film either with favorable comments, or with extremely negative criticism (especially from the left-wing press of the time). The only thing that everyone agreed on, was the performance of Melina Mercouri, who was praised. Most critics described the film as a resounding indictment against patriarchy, with the protagonist representing a female role model that was undoubtedly alien to the Greek society of the time, but also a timeless heroine of tragedy. According to historian Yannis Soldatos, Stella expressed the wishes of many women, few of whom, however, dared to follow her example. In particular, he personifies the clash of traditional values, moral code and honor with the erotic passion that ultimately does not survive in these contexts.
Stella is a singer in the center Paradise, conducted by Maria. Stella’s boyfriend is Alekos, the scion of a wealthy family. Stella, however, decides once again to put an end to their relationship, before the wear and tear comes, but also because Miltos has already appeared, a player of Olympiacos. Stella will initially avoid his close siege, but later succumb to his passion and charm. She loves him, but she also loves her freedom. So he will have to make an important choice.
The film was screened at the 8th Cannes Film Festival in 1955 and in the same year won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film by the Hollywood Foreign Press Correspondents’ Committee and was nominated for the Academy Award for Costume Design.
It was at that meeting in Cannes that Jules Dassin met Melina Mercouri, who became his muse in the following films of the great auteur.
In Greek cinemas, “Stella” premiered on November 21, 1955 and was the most commercial of the 1955-1956 season, out of a total of 24 Greek productions that were screened as it “cut” 134,142 tickets!
