An illegitimate child of Gladys Pearl Baker and an unknown father, she had a bad childhood: her mother was hospitalized several times in psychiatric institutions, while she herself was accommodated as a psycho-child in various families. At the age of nine she entered an orphanage, at eleven she lived with a friend of her mother, and at the age of sixteen she left school to marry a young worker. Her first successes as an actress came in 1950 with the films: John Houston’s The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve with Bette Davis. At the same time, a scandal arose when it was announced that she had previously posed naked for “Playboy” magazine.
