Description

The golden cat in feng shui symbolizes good luck, abundance and protection. The smiling cat with the raised leg attracts wealth, good luck, prosperity and welcomes friends or new customers to your place (if it is a workplace).
It is believed that Maneki Neko comes from Tokyo, or according to others from Kyoto. It first appeared during the late Edo period in Japan. The first records of Maneki Neko appear in Bukō nenpyō (1852). An advertisement for Maneki Neko in 1902 shows that by the end of the century they were popular. Beyond that, its exact origin is uncertain.
Some have noticed the similarities between Maneki Neko’s gesture and the cat washing her face. According to one Japanese opinion, a cat washing its face means that a guest will soon arrive. This belief may in turn be related to an even older Chinese proverb stating that if a cat washes its face, it will rain. Thus, it is possible that the idea will arise that a depiction of a cat washing its face will bring customers.
There are many legends about the birth of Maneki Neko, among which the most popular is the legend of the Gōtoku-ji temple. In the 17th century, a poor monk lived in the small Zen Temple in Setagaya, Tokyo. Although his life was very difficult, he fed a stray cat with his poor meals. One day, a samurai lord Ii Naotaka of the Hikone region was on his way hunting, when suddenly a storm broke out, so he was forced to find safety under a large tree near the temple. There he saw the cat, who, lifting one of her legs, directed him towards the temple. Curious, the samurai headed to the temple to better see the strange cat. Then, a thunderbolt destroyed the tree on which the samurai had earlier found shelter. Nakaota was so grateful that he became the patron saint of the temple. When the cat died, she was buried in a special cemetery for cats. In the temple, a statue of Maneki Neko was made in memory of this special cat.
Alternatively, according to a fairy tale, a shopkeeper (or owner of an inn, tavern, temple, etc.) hosted a malnourished stray cat, even though the food was marginally enough for him. As a sign of gratitude, the cat sat at the front of the store, inviting customers, thereby bringing prosperity as a reward. Since then, the “nodding cat” has been a symbol of good luck for small business owners. Such a cat could not be missing from the collection of hand spray antiseptics!
